The Fast and the Furious

Efficiency and convenience rule the kitchen, especially when it comes to the holy trinity of appliances: the refrigerator, range and dishwasher. Here's what's cooking

If remodeling the entire kitchen is not in your immediate future, keep the dream alive by updating tired appliances that have overstayed their welcome. Start with the main players and look to ease everyday tasks with new features that have become standard fare since last you were in the market.

Clean Up Forget about hand-washing those cookie sheets. That's what tall tubs are for. "The majority of them have an adjustable upper rack so you can lower the rack down to get things like large pans or wine glasses to fit," says Mint Schlief, a designer at Custom Kitchens, Inc., Richmond, Va. Some models get extra depth by relocating the motor. "Should the tub leak, the motor is away from where water can get to it since you have holes in the bottom, where plumbing, drains and things of that nature come out," Schlief says. •Whirlpool model DU1030XTX: Fits taller items on the lower rack or plates and sports bottles on the upper rack. Holds up to 12 place settings. Includes eco cycle. Can clean a load in nearly half the time of a normal cycle with a shortened cycle option. •Miele Model G 2872 SCVi: Features 19 wash programs. Fits up to 16 place settings. Provides split cutlery tray and built-in water softener.

Chill Out Always looking for one more spot in the refrigerator to wedge in a new jar of salsa? A new French-door refrigerator with two lower freezer drawers - a small one for easy access and a deep one for longer-term storage - might be in order. "These offer great space," says Amanda Reilly, interior designer at The Kitchen Source, Dallas. While the look is somewhat commercial, French-door refrigerators have all the benefits of residential refrigeration, she says. •LG model LMX28988ST: Provides capacity of nearly 28 cubic feet. Features ice system that frees up additional storage space in door. Includes two bottom freezer drawers. •Samsung model RF4287: Provides capacity of nearly 28 cubic feet. Has a counter-height, full-width independent mid-drawer with adjustable temperature control. Features uniform cooling for each shelf.

Eat In Sometimes waiting for water to boil can seem like an eternity. Induction cooktops make it snappy by bringing water to the boiling point faster than gas or electric cooktops. When an induction-compatible pan with a steel or magnetic bottom is placed on the cooktop, a current is produced that heats the pan and cooks the food inside. Even better, the surface surrounding the burners doesn't get hot, so spills don't get baked on. "I'm hearing more and more clients rave about induction cooking," says Cheryl Ryan, owner of Kitchens By Design, Elm Grove, Wis. "They love how quickly it heats and instantly cools to the touch when you remove the cookware." •GE model PHB925SPSS: Boasts oven capacity of 5.3 cubic feet. Delivers even air and heat circulation through convection system. Holds cooked foods in warming drawer. •Bosch 800 series: Has a 36-inch induction cooktop. Boils water twice as fast as conventional electric cooktops. Automatically adjusts cooking element to the size of pan.

Just 1 Thing

Runner-up

It may not be an appliance, but the kitchen sink is a key player in pretty much every kitchen routine. A leaky faucet, an aging sink basin or a backsplash that shows just how many splashes it has seen over the years are all indicators that the kitchen sink may need a little TLC. Assess the wear-and-tear and head into the local hardware or home furnishings store for solutions.
