Classic Kors

Get a runway-ready home with ideas from Michael Kors!

“If you start with the classics,” says famed fashion designer Michael Kors, “then you can play as you like with accessories.”

The “Project Runway” judge may spend his days creating new clothing and accessories collections and sizing up the design chops of reality-show contestants, but he points to the similarities between dressing a woman and dressing her home.

Think of the rooms in a home as individual outfits and the furniture, fabrics, wall treatments and décor elements as clothes and accessories. Pick one item per room to build on, like you would for a great pair of shoes or a fitted skirt.

Piecing together a décor landscape that truly defines you will take longer than choosing a new outfit, but it’s worth the wait – just like it is for that one purse that offers the perfect number of pockets.

Kors’ favorite room in his New York City home is his living room – or great room. “I wanted to be surrounded by the elements of sleek, classic interiors by George Nelson, Mies van der Rohe and Knoll, and give a little wink to the ’70s because that’s when I think New York was so much fun.”

Honesty is key; figure out how you want a room to feel before you start filling it with furniture.

“Half of my life is spent in hotels,” Kors says, “and I love them – Claridge’s in London, the Quisisana in Capri and the Amanpuri in Phuket. So I thought, how much would I love being at home yet still feel like I am waking up in the best hotel room in the world.”

Find décor and design elements that feel right to you, then start experimenting to see what actually works in the given space. And if you’re able to travel to top hotels in England, Italy and Thailand to find such examples, enjoy!
