Traditional, modern or eclectic - where do you fall? These are the three main categories of home décor styles, encompassing most of your design options. Whether you are walking into a furniture store or into a professional consultation, it's useful to have at least a rough idea of what appeals to you.
These three categories are the foundation of your personal aesthetic - just ask interior designer Laura Morrison, ASID, the co-owner of Unleash Design Studio in Portland, Ore. Consider this your basic home décor roadmap - happy decorating.
Traditional
"Traditional design is all about heavy or larger scale pieces, such as a big rolled arm sofa, or velvet curtains and dark woods," Morrison says. "The feel is warm and inviting, like your favorite coffee shop or grandma's house."
Modern
"Modern is tailored, using light colors," she says. "Natural materials are also prevalent, like woods, grasses and leather. Lately we've been seeing high contrast and more color being introduced, like an orange sofa with purple pillows."
Eclectic
"Eclectic can be the most fun, but also the hardest to pull off without looking like a flea market," she says. "Start with a piece of art you love or that lamp you bought on a whim but can't figure out what to do with, and surround it with items that will make it stand out, not compete."
