In Living Color

Don't live in fear - opt for a home of bold risks, with varied colors and textures

"Fear or uncertainty about color leads many people to overdo neutrals like cream and beige," says Celerie Kemble of Kemble Interiors in New York City and Palm Beach.

"Don't let a fear of being tacky render you tasteless. Whatever the overall look, try for a varied but balanced palette."

Other tips:

-Avoid over-common combinations like red and gold or cool blues and browns. "Everyone has seen these combinations hundreds of times in ads, catalogs and showrooms. If you work them into your décor, your friends might suspect you of kit shopping," she says.

-Be careful with white. "It must be integrated thoughtfully because of its ability to punctuate. And in the absence of other colors, it loses its power and becomes an overwhelmingly dull backdrop. In a white room, anything that is not white will steal the show."

-Vary surface quality. "If you are going to use a lot of pure colors, vary the texture. Painted surfaces should be a contrasting mix of glossy, matte and weathered finishes."
