Unbeatable Blueberries

Let the blues sweep you off your feet. Starting your own blueberry patch is more within reach than you probably thought

If you're looking for something different to do in your fruit patch this summer, get carried away with the blues. High in nutritious antioxidants, and easy to pop into your mouth - or a pie - blueberries have a variety of practical and delicious uses. If you're already growing strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or any other complimentary fruit in your garden, envision ways of combining them for tasty snacks or desserts your whole family will enjoy.

There are a variety of techniques behind starting and maintaining your own blueberry plant. So, why not give it a try? Plant a fruit that's easy to maintain along with the ones you already have, or start anew with just one blueberry plant. But, how do you go about cultivating blueberries in your yard? Fruit expert Ed Laivo, sales and marketing director for Dave Wilson Nursery in Modesto, Calif., which ships fruit trees, vines and bushes across the country, says that there are a few ways to go when it comes to enjoying blueberries.

"There's a couple of different schools of thought on that," Lavio says. "One school says strip all the berries off the first year," so they'll come back stronger and tastier the following year.

"My belief," he says, "is that you can eat them right away. You're not going to hurt that plant whatsoever. And you will get to enjoy them right away."

Whatever you decide to do, you can find yourself enjoying them within a matter of weeks and continuing to replant every year. Corina Bullock, youth education coordinator at the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati, suggests watering with a liquid seaweed fertilizer once in a while. If you plant your blueberries successfully, you can expect fruit to appear in mid July in most of the country and from mid-May to mid July in California, Lavia says.

This summer, blue is the new berry. So, take your fun in the sun, and add in some fresh blueberries.
