Bathroom or Bust

The National Kitchen and Bath Association's annual KBIS show unveils products that continue the bathroom's transformation into a sleek, hygienic, restful spa, which will make homeowners never want to leave home

A few years ago manufacturers, architects and designers realized there was no reason that homeowners couldn't enjoy the style and products that gave resort and hotel bathrooms their spa ambience: clean white and off-white marble, porcelain- and ceramic-tiled walls and floors; tubs and showers with multiple body sprays, rain heads and jets for pulsating relaxation; and bells and whistles that made staying there addictive, from stereo systems to flat-screen TVS and built-in coffee bars.

The next generation of products that bathroom manufacturers are now tempting the design trade - and ultimately homeowners with - continues the clean, sybaritic look and pleasures associated with bathing and grooming.

But new developments have emerged, on view recently at the annual National Kitchen and Bath Association's convention in Atlanta. Many reflect interest spotted elsewhere in the home - more and better storage that's attractive, greater use of digital technology, and heightened concern over environmental and energy consciousness, particularly in using water. More manufacturers are working to meet the Environmental Protection Agency's WaterSense standards for water-efficient products. By replacing a toilet with one that meets EPA criteria, you can save 4,000 gallons of water a year.

For homeowners concerned about the cost of redoing a bathroom, which now averages slightly more than $56,000 for a mid-range redo, according to "Remodeling" magazine's latest "Cost vs. Value Report," NKBA president Suzie Williford, a vice president of sales, at Kiva Kitchen and Bath, based in Houston, encourages homeowners to remember that their funds are going toward a long-term investment. "The bathroom is a room you'll enjoy every day and realize your money from more than most other rooms when you sell," she says.

The following are trends and products that stood out at the show and may entice you:

Beyond spa color

Though nothing offers a restful, soothing backdrop more than white, off-white and beige-colored tiles, countertops and flooring, vibrant primary colors are beginning to show up in bathrooms, perhaps, a result of dismay about the stagnant economy. One of Ann Sacks' most exciting new tiles was its three-dimensional burnt red "Blake Studios, Dahlia" tiles.

Speedier, digital-controlled laundry

Whether it's additional equipment or the main set, LG Electronics' equipment now has sensory systems that use less water, energy, and even just steam rather than dry clothing. Built-in ironing centers have also become more sophisticated with digital timers that turn off power after 60 minutes for safety; a variety of door materials, styles and colors coordinate with bathroom cabinetry.

Pulsating sprays, jets and rain heads

Though some have said these accessories are waning, Mark Karas, president-elect of the NKBA and general manager with Adams Kitchens in Stoneham, Mass., has found that his clients are still eager for them. "Most have at least five," he says. Alsons' "ActivTouch" has three spray-selection buttons that allow bathers to select up to eight combinations with a simple one-handed push of a button.

Modern, floating cabinets

The more sculptural, contemporary look of wall-hung cabinets makes rooms seem larger and are easier to clean underneath, says Williford. Many cabinets also have less detailing for a more modern look.
