It's time to carve out some 'you' space - update your bedroom to allow for a boudoir fit for a queen

Lights, color, action! Introducing the boudoir: By French definition, it was historically used as an addition to a woman's bedroom as her own private suite. Just as storied designs are fashioned after past French kings and queens, today's inspired boudoir starts with you. Aiming for French-inspired design can be a bit challenging, so start with these expert tips to help you turn the dreamy concept into a practical reality.

Lights

1. Keep It Under Control: If you're tailoring to your own style, what better place to start than the lighting? French designer Isabelle Odjaghian of San Diego-based Interiors by Isabelle recommends installing lights that put you in control.

"Lighting is crucial, regardless of where it is," she says. Dimmers are a great investment, she explains, as they put you in control.

2. Lessen the Shadows: Odjaghian also suggests staying away from overhead lighting. After all, a boudoir is a great space for applying makeup. "You don't want anything that is too harsh. You want to have lighting that will give you a very even and true color," she says.

"Lighting should be at face height, not above." The higher the lights, the more shadows they can create on your face. Light should come from the side, she says.

Color

3. What's Hot: "The current new colors are in the purple, lavender and gray tones ... a color that's restful and calming," says Kathy Adcock-Smith of Dallas, Texas-based Adcock-Smith Design. She says that depending on your personal preference, you could go for anything from "pale amethyst to eggplant." But for makeup application spaces, keep in mind that color and lighting go hand-in-hand. "Color needs to compensate for [light]," she says.

4. It's All in the Mood: "It could be a mood choice," says Tiffany Harris, one of the founders of Layla Grayce, a design company based in Pasadena, Calif.

"It's always better to do trends in the textiles ... painted finishes, bold colors, jewel tones." It's also a great idea to start with one thing, such as minimalist furniture, and work your way to color afterward, she says.

Action

5. Out with the Old: "European design is based on historical design - it could be a vintage reproduction, or it could be 100 years old," Harris says. Either works as "a timeless tradition," she says - whether that means antiquing the walls, putting up wallpaper or just throwing in "trendy twists on traditional style."

"Design is in the details, and living in a beautiful surrounding is more of a necessity," in order to add that touch of serenity to your room, according to Harris.

Above all, whatever you decide to do, whether it's updating a vanity or creating a boudoir from scratch, it has to be appealing to you. Her advice: "Ask yourself, 'Is it beautiful?'
