Oh, Baby!

A glue gun can make nearly any idea a reality

After the birth of her first child, New Yorker Abby Pecoriello started "Crafty Mama," a class designed for new mothers to get together and share experiences while they created homemade items. Maintaining that "those who coo together, glue together," the Crafty Mamas soon began to grow into a network of groups and even a book, "Crafty Mama Makes 49 Fast, Fabulous Foolproof (Baby and Toddler) Projects" (Workman, 2008).

Touting the benefits of homemade baby décor, the author says "you can control what matches and what doesn't match. Crafting lets you reuse, save money, and you get something that's also personalized."

Pecoriello is an advocate of using inexpensive craft store materials to create one-of-a-kind accessories that both adults and children appreciate.

"Decoupage is a great technique that doesn't take a lot of money. You just need glue and a pretty sheet of paper. [Use] cheap frames and personalize them with different stickers or letter beads," she explains.

Best of all, the author says the homemade frames require minimal time or talent. "They're quick and simple and they showcase your baby. The biggest challenge will not be crafting, it will be to choose the picture you want."

Pecoriello also outlines how to create frames for birth announcements, as well as customized hangers, lampshades and storage boxes, no matter the skill level.

"I don't know how to sew, but I do have my hot glue gun," she says.
