Budget Baths

A little goes a long way when comes to the powder room

When it comes to the bathroom, spicing things up on a tight budget can be tough, but it is possible!

The easiest way to change up the look of your bathroom is to put in new towels and a shower curtain. For Orange County, Calif., designer Amanda Zettel of Homemade Design, using fabric as a curtain is a great way to add a new texture to the space. "As long as you use a plastic liner, you can use whatever fabric you want," Zettel says. "Use a fusible bonding web, like Stitch Witchery, to iron the two together." She also recommends using fabric to skirt the vanity.

"Sometimes lighting makes a big difference," says Elizabeth Lonseth, owner of Elizabeth Lonseth Interiors in Seattle. "Not only the fixture looks new, but also the amount of light itself coming in. With a new fixture you can change the whole room entirely." Adding sconces around the mirror can really light up your face as well.

If you're having acoustic problems in the bathroom, use some waterproof fabric and quilt padding to line the walls, Zettel says. Staple gun fabric to the quilt padding and use trim and fabric glue to cover seams. It can help keep in unwanted sounds in a stylish way, Zettel says.

Changing walls or a ceiling is another trick to upgrading this room. Wallpaper has really evolved - finding interesting and pretty designs isn't as difficult as you think, says Jennifer Mirich, principal designer at the Halcyon House in Denver. "Try applying the paper to a single wall for an accent," she says. "The right print can be applied to all wall surfaces, or even the ceiling, to create a rich, jewel-like feel."

If all else fails, Lonseth suggests you neutralize. "Something my mother, who was in fashion design, taught me was to do bathrooms in neutrals, and then you can change up rugs or towels for different color schemes."
