Just call them small miracles.
With a dash of creativity, small gardens, patios, decks can become magical spaces that engage all the senses and cater to a wide variety of moods.
Start by taking your cues from the space itself, says Marjolaine Arsenault, a garden consultant in Chestertown, N.Y.
"The land has its own energy, its own life," she says, "you just have to be still, listen and feel what the place wants to be and then the inspiration comes."
Think outside the box about how you'd really like to use the space, says Cynthia S. Benoit, president of Benoit Exterior Design in Carlsbad, Calif.
"If you know the basics, then you can find the materials that go together and be amazed where you can find things," she says.
At the home of one of her clients, for instance, she created an intimate tea table with a metal gazebo kits. She added pots with vines that climb up the gazebo, and then draped four mosquito nets she found at an international market for dramatic effect. The furniture is metal and wicker to increase the romantic feeling.
So if you're guilty of stashing lawn chairs on your patio or deck, search for a little inspiration to create a more inspiring place that better fits your personality.
Grand entrance
Create a doorway to your garden with a simple arbor that can serve as a focal point, or couple it with a bench to create a cozy destination.
Light my fire
Fireplaces add much character and warmth to outdoor areas. When used with precaution, they offer a wonderful opportunity to bond with family and while roasting marshmallows or hotdogs.
Hang time
Enjoy carefree moments on a novel rope hammock that resembles a classic porch swing. T Outer Banks Deluxe Double-Rope Porch Swing is an example of one that's built for two. Place it near a garden trellis, and you have an instant oasis.
Checkmate
An old-fashioned game of chess takes on a new dimension with oversized pieces. Many retailers offer equipment made to resist the outdoor elements.
Tiki time
An outdoor tiki bar conjures the image of sheer relaxation. You can find basic tiki bars with bar stools, built-in glassware racks and shelves for bottles. They're great for enjoying cool drinks or a full meal al fresco.
