As the Pantone Fashion + Home Smart Color System’s Color of the Year for 2009, mimosa is here to lighten the mood. “It’s a color of happiness and optimism,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “The messages on the platform this year were of change and hope, and it’s important to inject a color into life that personifies that hope and optimism.” The color is great anywhere in the home, whether it be on the walls or in the dinnerware; it instantly adds cheerfulness to any room. If you’re in the mood for a little change in the new year, sprinkle your space with hints of mimosa. Take on some do-it-yourself projects and change a room’s aura by adding a little yellow to the mix. Winters can be dark and dreary, so using yellow on the walls really gives an illusion of sunlight, especially for darker rooms without a lot of natural light, says Eiseman. The color can be fabulous for linens, and it’s a great accent for pillows or cushions or as an accent chair. Yellow is also a great go-with color. And this year, pairing it with gray will give your home a fashion-forward style. “There is something about gray and yellow that is just striking,” says Michelle Lamb, co-founder and chairman of Marketing Directions, Inc., a Minneapolis-based interior design consultancy firm. If gray isn’t for you, yellow and blue can add a little nostalgia to the air, while yellow and purple make you feel like French royalty. Treasure Chest Whether it’s in his room or her’s, a six-drawer chest never looked so chic. Brighten the bedroom with a piece of furniture that truly pops. Afraid of a color clash? No worries. Yellow goes with almost any wall color. Early Bird Special If mimosa’s a bit too strong for your living room, just take a sip of color by adding subtle yellow accents to your existing décor. Throw pillows and cushions are great ways to introduce new tones sans the shock. KP Duty Whether it’s dinnerware or table linens, the kitchen is a great place to start when trying to add a little hype to your home.
