Clutter no more!

Still trying to get organized? Follow these steps to un-junk your home

Taking on the task of de-cluttering your house can be extremely daunting, especially if you are a certified pack rat. Everyone has unwanted clutter lying around, however, even if you are sentimental and can't bear to throw anything away, there are ways to create a clutter-free home.

In terms of where to start, there is no right way to begin the de-cluttering process. However, Debbie Wiener of Silver Springs, Md.-based Designing Solutions, suggests to, "start in the room that is the causing the most trouble.

"Once you realize you can't find a skirt in your closet or you can't find the remote in the living room, it's time to designate a weekend or a day off, or an evening to de-clutter your home," says Weiner.

One way that clutter manifests itself is with the stuff that you think you may need one day. For example, you haven't used that obscure kitchen utensil since you bought it, but you don't want to give it away 'just in case.'

While sentimentality is something that most of us battle with, there are ways to have your cake, and eat it too. Literally.

"It's like a buffet. You don't need everything. You have to pick and choose what you want the most. A few items, a few mementos will preserve memories," says Weiner. In some cases, if space allows, putting a few larger items in storage can be harmless as well.

The reason that getting rid of clutter can be such a challenge is that it never seems to go away. The mail arrives every day with more trash that begins to pile up, even if you clean out what was already there. It is inevitable that unwanted items will creep back, but there are ways to curb the impact.

"If people have a need to save an article because they didn't read it yet, they don't need the whole magazine. Tear out the article, and put it in a file to be read on the weekend when you have time or to be read on vacation," says Esther Sadowsky, owner of Charm & Whimsy in New York City.

Additionally, Weiner says that in order to really keep clutter out, it needs to be worked into your weekly cleaning regimen.

"It's kind of one of those weekly chores you have to do like changing the sheets or dusting. You just have to go through and organize."

But don't fret if you don't want to sacrifice design for organization. There is a huge market out there for cute and practical items for organization.

"There are so many beautiful things out there for organizing your home," Weiner says. "There are beautifully patterned file folders and accordion files. Perhaps you'll be more enthusiastic about the job if you know it's going to be organized and pretty."
