Mix color, texture and time periods to create an eclectic bedroom all your own

When you're decorating, it's easy to become obsessed with making sure every pillow and chair goes with everything else. But the eclectic look sets you free from those rules and worries, giving you permission to create a personal look. It's about mixing everything from different styles and periods to wood species for visual contrasts that work. Try these simple design guidelines for pulling off this fun approach in the bedroom.

Pick a direction

"People are really afraid to be free because they think someone might mistake being eclectic for being hodgepodge or mismatched," says Sarah Barnard, of Los Angeles-based Barnard Design. "It's important to have a direction and not just purchase aimlessly." Think about the overall look you want to achieve, then start writing down ideas. What will it feel like? Are there key words you would use to describe it?

Go slow

"The process is enhanced by doing it over time," Barnard says. "Keep adding one layer at a time." She recommends starting with the bed then gradually making additional purchases. Assess each new item - whether it's a table, lamp or duvet - before adding the next.

Find common ground

Look for unifying elements to help your eclectic bedroom feel put together. If you have chairs in different styles, for instance, upholster them all in the same fabric. To successfully mix fabrics on the bed, Jackie Glisson, of Memphis, Tenn.-based JustaDecorator.com, suggests choosing patterns that all have one color in common. Then pick up that same shade elsewhere in the room.

Loosen up

"I want people to know there's no right way or wrong way," says Vinitha Watson, creative director of Belmont, Calif.-based home décor and textiles company Kaaya. "Bring a little humor into any room." One easy way: Add a childish accent, either from your own past or a new purchase. Watson and her husband, for example, picked up ceramic piggy banks on a road trip.
