Miles of Tile

The kitchen is an ideal place for tiled surfaces

Using paint or wallpaper on kitchen walls isn't always pretty. Wallpaper is easily damaged and paint gets stains that don't go away. Tiles have always been the standard for kitchen floors; a tiled surface is hard to damage, easy to clean and sanitize, and looks great. So why trap the tile on the floor? Let it wind its way up your kitchen walls and sit on top of your counter.

Morwenna Brett offers several tips to make tiling your kitchen simple in her book "The Home Decorator's Tile Bible," (Firefly Books, 2008).

1) Kitchen surfaces need to stand up to hot pots and pans and food splashes, which make tiles a functional yet beautiful solution for walls, floors and countertops.

2) Tiles work best behind cooking, sink and food preparation areas. A backsplash behind the stove can be a perfect place to show off a tile mural, picture tiles or a panel of special tiles that are too expensive for a large area.

3) Surfaces in kitchens are already divided by cabinets, appliances and counters, so don't use complicated designs. Keep it simple and stick to a few main colors unless you have a big open space to tile.

4) Floors can be made of slate, stone, quarry, ceramic or porcelain tiles, which are easy to care for if properly sealed and will last a very long time.

5) Think you'll miss your wallpaper border? Consider a range of tiles that includes matching tile-edging strips for a classy finish to countertops and window surrounds.
