Glass Menagerie

An eclectic mix of stemware combines form, function

From sweet tea in the summer to hot cider in the winter, glasses of all shapes, sizes, textures and colors can make a room visually pop while serving a purpose. Here's how to make the most of this dining essential.

Keep an eclectic mix of glasses and stemware on display for ascetics and accessibility. For Eugenia Santiesteban, the lifestyle senior market editor at Domino magazine, the key to a mixed collection is becoming your own editor. "People keep items they receive as gifts that they don't really like. The first step in choosing what to display is getting rid of the pieces that don't work."

Toss the tumbler from Uncle Tom and get styling. You don't have to be a design diva to achieve a chic collection. Discover your inner style guru by going with your gut. "Collecting pieces is a natural process. Whether aware of it or not, we are drawn to the same styles and color palettes," says Santiesteban. "When at a flea market or antiquing, remember that your selecting has a way of working itself out." Stop worrying about the look not matching - keep color palettes and styles in the same circle and let loose with heights and sizes.

For Santiesteban and the team at Domino, no piece is too fancy to be used. From crystal to chrome, "Use it and live it," says Santiesteban. Put this advice into practice with an open hutch or display on open shelving. Mix and match water glasses with different wine glasses. Watch for combinations that compete with each other. "Two strong colors together can be dangerous because it can come across as tacky," Santiesteban warns. Deep purple next to black creates a look that channels more goth than good. Heavy detailed crystal doesn't work with organic chunky pieces. "You want to keep cohesion," says Santiesteban.

To build a collection that dubs as décor as much as practical, mix designer with mainstream. Santiesteban loves CB2 for their inexpensive tumblers as a counterpoint to a really ornate piece from William Yeoward, an English company that reproduces the looks from the 18th and 19th centuries. When seeking modern, clean classic styles, Dansk's collection is Santiesteban's go-to and when searching for vintage glassware to bridge colors and styles. "Anthropologie's mismatched looks go well with all pieces and offer an inexpensive alternative to high priced antiques."

Only one rule applies to a hodge-podge hutch - always have at least two of one piece when entertaining. "Using five of one and one of another looks like you are just missing a piece of the collection. Creating a tabletop with at least two of one style looks like a planned accident," says Santiesteban. Eclectic collecting with eyeful editing quenches any thirst for style.
