Rescue forgotten furniture with traditional upholstery projects

Reinvent your furniture – from headboards to seat cushions to storage chests - with upholstery techniques . They're easier than you think.

Alex Law and Posy Gentles break down the upholstery how-tos and the what-not-do's in "Quick and Easy Upholstery: 15 step-by-step easy-to-follow projects" (CICO Books, 2008). Heres what they share in their about how to choose your fabric:

1) Hold the fabric in your hand before you make the decision to buy. Don't rely on pictures from the Internet or magazines. A 4-inch (10 cm) square sample is useful, but most companies will lend you a larger piece of fabric, big enough to drape and give you a true impression of weight, texture and size of pattern.

2) Not all fabrics are suitable for all purposes. Once that may be fine for curtains will not suit a much-used armchair. Also consider fire-retardant fabrics. Be guided by the fabric companies.

3) Don't forget pattern repeats. For a large pattern, more fabric is needed for pattern matching. Be guided by your supplier.

4) Take into account your lifestyle. If you have four children and a dog, white may not be the most sensible choice for your sitting room. If you do you upholstery groundwork well, you can always recover later.

5) If you are buttoning the back of a chair, remember that the pleating will distort a large patterned fabric. A small repeating pattern or plain fabric may be the best choice.

6) Rules are made to be broken but consider carefully first.
