From 0 to 60 in the kitchen

“Honey, I think we should get a Porsche.”

Screeeeech. Was that the sound of a new car or your husband’s heart skipping a beat? You may have never thought you would say those words this Father’s Day, but when it comes to getting your man behind the stove, the Poggenpohl Porsche Design kitchen is a new kind of ride.

“We want the same sensation of when you drive a Porsche automobile,” says Ted Chappell, president of Poggenpohl U.S. “It’s the highest quality, high performance and makes them feel good – it’s an exciting experience, not just a regular, traditional, boring kitchen.”

The kitchen begins with a base of sleek aluminum frames that mount on the wall, while everything from cabinetry to lighting is then installed within the frames.

As roles change in society, Chappell says it’s time to acknowledge every man’s place in the kitchen and meet his new needs.

“We see that more and more men are getting interested in cooking and being around the kitchen,” Chappell says. “We definitely wanted to cater to that market. I think they might be a little more technical.”

Technical may be an understatement. This kitchen boasts drawers with an electronic motion drive system that pop open with a simple touch, LED lights that adjust according to the room’s light and an LCD screen to check email and watch a DVD. There is also a small port to hook up an LCD projector and a docking station to connect your iPod.

At this point, you may have an important question: What about the cooking? Not to worry – the kitchen is outfitted with Miele appliances, ready for heavy-duty use.

But if you’re not ready for the $50,000-$200,000 price tag, there are other options to make your kitchen man-friendly in time for Father’s Day. Paul Hatch, president of Chicago-located TEAMS Design, suggests refreshing your houseware items.

“If the husband is one of the many who prefers to be grilling outside … replicate some of the things in the outdoors,” he says. “Thick butcher’s chopping boards have a certain heft and are a little bit more macho. Barbeque tools may be cliché, but some utensils in the kitchen, such as knives and meat preparation tools, tend to be popular.”

TEAMS Design senior designer Jason LePinske says to keep it simple.

“Anything multipurpose distracts us from the task at hand,” LePinske says in an email. “It’s not that men are simple-minded, it’s just that when the urge to open a bottle arises, an opener with integrated toothpick, saw, fishing pole, etc., provides more questions than answers.”

LePinske also suggests updating the color scheme with dark wood tones, matte black, or brushed or frosted nickel. Avoid anything plastic-y or brightly colored, he says, if you want to make the kitchen more man-friendly.

“Let form follow function, but remember that looking cool is also a function,” he says. “Remove any fake or non-functional decoration such as silk plants or ceramic roosters. Ok, the rooster cookie jar can stay.”

And don’t be surprised if your favorite father jumps right in. Says Hatch: “The market is changing … The guy is coming back indoors after learning how to grill and wants to try some other things out beyond dealing with the burgers."
