Bathroom Break!

The famous ‘because-I-said-so’ speech isn’t always effective. When it comes to motivating kids to take a bath or brush their teeth, take some tips from the professionals

Convincing children to hit the tub or brush their teeth are important things on a parent’s to-do list, but getting them to break away from a favorite cartoon can be a challenge. How can you make this daily routine a bit easier on yourself and them? Get your kids excited about using the space by letting them add their personal touches – when your kids take ownership of their bathroom getting them into it is easy.

Interior designer Kristin Koetz, owner of Design Paradigm in Wilsonville, Ore., suggests that parents think about the kids’ bathroom in the same way they think of their own – as a quiet spa-like retreat.

Rather then over-stimulating the children with a bathroom environment that is so busy it’s difficult to tell when it is straightened up, Koetz recommends that parents create a room that invites relaxation and a calm ritual. “It was not that long ago that a bath for them was a nurturing, bonding ritual.”

Parents can guide their kids in finding fresh colors that are their favorites. “Aqua, greens and yellow oranges are especially nice as they are found in nature.

“Wall coverings that combine soothing hues of several colors can bring a more interesting finish and flow to the walls,” adds Koetz, who uses larger areas of color like soft green floor, pale aqua walls, and a maize-blush ceiling. “[The bathroom] is a nice place to glaze the walls for subtle color variation.”

Your kids will enjoy and take care of spaces where their opinion is taken into account, says Vicky Serany, a principal designer for Southern Studio in Apex, N.C. “Every time I work with children, I allow them to explore a paint fan deck. They almost always choose the brightest and most cheerful colors.

“Rather than rejecting the glowing colors, we work to incorporate them into the space. I always try to keep the more permanent materials like cabinetry, fixtures and tile neutral especially with the rapidly changing tastes of children as they grow.”

You can help the kids own their bath space by arranging a colorful container or basket for each child where soaps, bright washcloths, sponges and toys are easily available.

“The kids can have a sense of individuality about their experience and learn to nurture themselves; something that we often have to relearn as adults,” says Koetz. “This is where the latest theme can come in with their favorite characters, and colors.” With two or more children, different genders and ages, the bath bins let each child make their own statement.

Serany advises her clients to brainstorm decorating ideas with their kids, hit the stores or flip through catalogs together, and allow them to choose something they love, “a paint color, shower curtain, artwork, or bath accessories, then work those into the overall design. I love working with children and find their ideas refreshing and inspiring.”

Incorporate these suggestions and your biggest challenge might be getting the kids out of the bathroom rather than getting them in!
