By the time you finish reading this article, you could have started washing your kitchen floor, vacuuming your living room, cleaning your pool, mowing your lawn and clearing out your rain gutters.

All at the same time. Without getting your hands dirty.

Household cleaning robots not only have the ability to do these tasks for you today, they are expected to do them for more of us in the future. According to a January 2008 study by Research and Markets, a market research firm, consumer robot markets for cleaning, lawn mowing, pool cleaning and other home services reached $297 million in 2007 and are expected to reach $1.8 billion by 2014.

Experts say increased efficiency in robot processors has led to lower costs, making cleaning robots affordable to the average consumer.

“At one time only robot hobbyists, science fiction fans or early adopters would even consider owning a household robot,” says Steve Rainwater, editor of www.robots.net. “Today, they sell them at every mall, and typical consumers are buying them.”

Cleaning robots can begin paying for themselves almost instantly. Consider iRobot's Looj, which can clean out a 60-foot section of rain gutter in 10 minutes.

“If you’re an older guy, you can't go up there and do it yourself without the danger of falling off a ladder. You have to hire a guy for $500,” says Bryan Bergeron, editor of Servo Magazine. “Or you can put this Looj device in your gutter to have it cleaned out for you. It's $100. That's affordable.”

The Massachusetts-based iRobot is the leader when it comes to house cleaning robots. The company's products include the Roomba, a vacuum cleaning robot starting from around $250; the Scooba, a robot that scrubs and squeegees floors for around $400; and the Dirt Dog, a robot that sweeps up nuts, bolts, woodchips and debris for $129.

And while they may be less alluring than a pool boy, iRobot and Aquaproducts both offer pool cleaning robots (the Verro and Aquabot), selling for $700 and $820 respectively. Both require no installation, suction lines or hoses.

But not all of these automatics are automatically affordable.

“It's still a niche market,” says Bergeron. He suggests the Robomower, made by Friendly Robotics, which he says has “the best market penetration of any robotic lawnmower for the consumer.”

Starting at around $1,200, the Robomower uses no gas or oil. Its blades can cut any type of grass, and its sensors can detect obstacles such as rocks, trees and debris.

But what about the ultimate household robot – the butler or maid? If that’s what you’re waiting for, you could be in luck soon. Bergeron says Japan, the industry leader, already offers cooking robots for around $20,000 and butler robots for about $10,000.
