Add a slice of childhood to the living room with stuffed animals of a more mature breed

Dog pillows

You may have loved your teddy bear since you were five years old, but somehow his patchy brown fur and button eyes no longer fit with your home's décor. But don't worry, you can still show your playful side - and avoid a decorating faux pas - with animal-themed throw pillows. At K Studio, for example, two of the most popular pillows depict woodland creatures drawn with a few elegant lines.

"All of my work has a light-heartedness, but I work very hard at avoiding cuteness," says Shelly Klein, owner of the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based design studio.

Then there's Pillow Pillow Pillow, which features a whole line of stylish cat- and dog-shaped pillows. Initially inspired by New York City designer Aaron Stewart's Piebald dachshund Scooter, each pillow has a name, and almost, it seems, a personality.

"They're not so kitschy or so bold that they detract, which is why adults love them" says Zachary Kortright, product manager of Pillow Pillow Pillow. "They have warmth and character, but still fit into your lifestyle."

A crossbreed of designer pillows and stuffed animals, these pillows are great to leave on the couch for guests to lounge against and small enough take with you when traveling.

"I definitely take my Scooter pillow on the airplane with me," Stewart says. "I can't bring my own dog, so this is the closest I can get."

And while your teddy bear may be safely stowed away in the attic, you would be proud to have these critters hanging around. Like the pillows from K Studio, these products feature a clean aesthetic with subtle tones. But just because they're appropriate doesn't mean Scooter and friends aren't conversation pieces.

"They're universal," Stewart says. "Everyone loves pets - from old to young."

Pillow Pillow Pillow already has one line of dog and cat pillows, but more are in the making. A new line inspired by photo submissions to the company's Web site will be rolling out soon, and you can still send in a photo of your cat or dog consideration at pillowpillowpillow.com.
