Slipcover if:
• A sofa is in good shape but getting a little worn.
• The sofa no longer fits a room’s decor.
• If the sofa will get a lot of wear. Use slipcovers to protect a light-colored sofa or even to change the look of a room with the seasons.
Reupholster if:
• The old sofa is well-made, has an interesting trim or shape that you like, or is simply a treasured piece of furniture.
• You may save money and have a stylish find if you reupholster someone else’s cast-off. According to most experts, older sofas have far better workmanship than newer ones. A 20-year-old sofa may be a better candidate for reupholstering than a 5-year-old one.
Buy a new sofa if:
• The old one is poorly made and falling apart. A cheap sofa has a frame made from pine or an inferior wood.
• Pieces are poorly joined.
• The cushions are stuffed with foam rubber and the springs are shot.
