Second Time Around

Breathe new life into your home with some unlikely candidates. A little love and elbow grease go a long way when it comes to reviving basement finds and garage sale discoveries

Yes, it’s true. Your garage and basement might be holding the secret to your next room makeover. A bench can become a coffee table, old trunks can morph into tables with storage, and old doors covered with glass can make a home office desk, say design experts.

“Repurposing furniture is a great way to add an unexpected twist of style and to recycle items that otherwise might be tossed,” says Kathy Wilson, the editor of TheBudgetDecorator.com and the home-decorating expert for LifetimeTV.com.

So here’s how to take furniture from the garage sale pile to the enviable (and usable) pile.

Forget preconceived ideas about the purpose of things “Whether it’s a worn out armoire that fits in the kitchen next to a shiny, stainless steel fridge and finds a new life as a pantry, or a pile of fruit crates that house your library of book or CDs, think of new ways to use old things,” say Mark and Sally Bailey, pioneers of the recycled home movement and co-authors of “Restoration Home” (Ryland Peters & Small, 2007). “If there is the faintest glimmer of life in something, rescue it,” the Baileys say.

Make sure the furniture is fit for the job

Wilson says that while that rickety old bench might look terrific as a coffee table, it probably won’t hold up if you can’t make the proper repairs. “Always remember to make sure the piece of furniture getting repurposed is sturdy enough for its new role.”

Don’t think repurposed furniture has to look “perfect”

The Baileys say keeping the integrity of the piece is their philosophy behind restoration:. “Utter perfection and sleek smooth painted walls can rapidly become boring.” Instead, they advise to embrace the stripped wood with crackled and flaky paints, or mismatched chairs, “This will you give so much more room for creativity and the freedom to invent.”

Integrate the piece

If the room is modern, don’t repurpose your old country style chair into a better looking version of a country style chair. “Match the mood and scheme of the room,” Wilson advises. You want to make the piece look like it belongs.”

Don’t just let anyone repurpose Great Aunt Mae’s chest of drawers

The Baileys say, first and foremost, to get involved in the process. “Go back to what attracted you to the piece originally and have the person work with you from there.” As for the nuts and bolts, Wilson says that if you hire someone to do the repurposing for you, do a thorough background check. “Know what types of materials they are using, how long it will take, what their policy is if you aren’t happy with the outcome. Ask for references and photos of work they have done and it get it all in writing.”
