Design With Change In Mind

Removable wall art is making your child's tween years a bit easier on you and your home, offering endless DIY decor options. But these wall stickers aren't only designed for your child's bedroom – they're popping up in family rooms, kitchens and offices

If you have a tween or teen living under your roof, you know they are traveling full speed in a zillion different directions; they talk fast, are constantly on the go, and have a mind of their own. And when it comes to decorating their bedrooms, they have definite opinions. And those opinions can change – often.

So what are budget-conscious parents to do when helping their children decorate their lair? Removable wall art to the rescue! This creative product allows your kids to personalize their rooms with peel-and-stick wall art. Brilliantly named, WallPops do just that – make ordinary walls pop with mod colors, shapes and designs.

“We conducted research and focus groups with teens and came out with fabulous bold, bright colors,” says Paula Berberian, creative services manager at Randolph, Mass.-based Brewster Wallcovering Inc. “This product was developed specifically for young teens through college-age kids – and they love it. We are selling out in college bookstores all over.”

“You can even use WallPops to decorate a room for a special occasion or party,” Berberian continues. Or she suggests customizing the pieces by cutting the vinyl wall art into different shapes to create your own design.

Venice, Calif.-based blik, LLC offers wall art for commitment-phobes of every age as well, with wall decals featuring everything from giraffes to aliens, and books to ornate patterns. The concept for removable wall art is simple: Peel and stick, mix and match, reposition, change your mind, start over. “WallPops are personalized wall art that gives kids the freedom to express themselves, but not create something that is permanent,” explains Berberian. “Think Post-It Notes but with a little more tack.”

But images and graphics aren’t your only options if you’re in the market for removable creativity – words and phrases are quickly becoming hot items, jumping walls throughout the country. WiseDecor, located in Fairfax Station, Va., for example, sells customizable word art for every room in the house – “Bon Appétit” for the kitchen/dining room; a favorite line from a book, a list of expressive words or your tween’s name for her bedroom; or a family mantra for the living room.

The options for livening up all the walls in your home are endless. And because they leave no residue, these wall designs can easily be moved around and repositioned by fickle teens or adults to keep up with their multiple design personalities.
