Multimedia Bathrooms for the Busiest Generation

For decades, bathing has been a relaxing, quiet escape from the world. Several new products, however, are aiming to keep you on the go, in the know and wired for sound while you shower, shave and bathe

If you thought your Jacuzzi tub and towel warmer guaranteed ascension to elite bathroom status, we've got news: The luxury bathroom stakes have been raised.

To keep pace with the hipster bathroom Joneses, experts recommend some high-tech bells and whistles, stat.

"We're a technologically advanced society,"? says Michelle LaRiviere, of Aquae Sulis, a kitchen and bath showroom, Glen Ellyn, Ill. "So there's definitely a trend toward high-tech bathroom features. Consumers are used to their iPods and their Blackberries; they want that technology to carry over into all areas of their lives."

Apparently that includes the shower stall.

"We have the Kohler DTV right now, which is equipped with a programmable shower station. This technology is very advanced. LaRiviere says that the Kohler model gives digital readouts to you after your bath so that you can see what temperature you like best for future showers, but the internal computer remembers, even if you don't."

"Different people in one household might have different preferences,"? says LaRiviere. "The husband might want the three separate sprays to hit simultaneously, while the wife wants to use the handheld feature. The settings record this and modifies for each person's preference."

Not having to mess with the pesky water temperature anymore will not only leave bathers with more time for old-school reading and relaxing, but also catching up on favorite television shows or work. The visiPad Mediastation from Keuco/Visiomatic can send e-mail or text messages, surf the Web, make a phone call or watch DVDs while you scrub all those hard-to-reach places. With a waterproof screen and a remote control, there's no need to miss a show, get a sports update or spend one precious moment without Internet connectivity.

LaRiviere says that installing a television in the shower isn't the number one priority for all bathroom remodelers, but says people are always looking for “tech-forward style, especially in what many consider to be the most relaxing room in the house.

One such forward-thinking feature is called the SoundTile Speakers, also made by Kohler. These "low-profile" speakers rise only slightly from the wall in which they are installed and lend a sonic hand to your shower rendition of "I Will Always Love You," or whatever karaoke tune you sing best into loofah microphone.

Do these technological advances really make bathroom time more pleasant?

It depends.

If you're looking for an escape (i.e., bubbles, hot water, silence) from the rigors of the daily grind then adding things that go "beep" in the bathroom probably isn't for you. If you're the kind of person that wants to feel connected, informed and more than a little pampered, then a multimedia bathroom might be a lot of fun. Especially when they figure out how to make a digital Rubber Ducky.
