The Great Spring-Cleaning Debate:

To Everything, There is a Season … or Not

A little now, a little later: Cleaning guru Donna Smallin holds with cleaning in short bursts year ’round. ‘Like anything in life you have to set your goals.’

Furniture is fun insomuch as you can shop, buy and arrange it to suit your daily needs and aesthetic liking. But that’s only half the battle. The rest of the time, you’ll have to clean said house full of furniture to keep it presentable.

One school of thought holds that one shouldn’t wait for spring to mount a spring-cleaning effort. Donna Smallin, author of several cleaning and organizing books, including “The One-Minute Cleaner Plain & Simple” (Storey Publishing, 2007), believes in the power of efficient cleaning year ’round.

“With cleaning, just like anything in life, you have to set your goals,” she says. “Determine what really needs to be done now. Do high-traffic areas where you can make a big impact, such as bathrooms, floors, and windows. Schedule cleaning time in 15- to 30-minute blocks and tackle one project at a time.”

• For squeaky-clean windows, use a half-cup sudsy ammonia (ammonia with a little detergent in it) with one pint rubbing alcohol and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Add enough water to make one gallon of liquid to wash windows inside and out.

• Washing feather pillows? Add two clean tennis balls when drying to fluff them.

• Wipe ceiling fan blades with a cloth dampened with white vinegar so it will cut through grease and dirt.

• Don’t waste time doing things like washing walls if all you really need to do is spot clean marks.

• Dusty or soiled candles? Clean them with an absorbent cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol.

• Invest in a couple of micro-fiber cloths for streak-free, lint-free cleaning of hard surfaces.

Use Smallin’s ACT acronym in your cleaning: Assess, Commit to change, and Tackle one area at a time.
