People are rediscovering their fireplaces and as they do so, they’re loading up on accessories, says Charles Adams, designer, and owner of www.allthingsfire.com, an Internet source for fireplace items. What’s the well-dressed fireplace sporting these days?
The ‘Iron’ Man
“We’re seeing a resurgence in clean lines,” says Adams, who lives in Ames, Iowa. Wrought iron is the preferred metal for the streamlined design, according to Adams. It’s durable and versatile for everything from the screen to the tools. In addition, wrought-iron accessories are less expensive than others.“Brass, for example, would cost about $200 more for a tool set,” Adams says.
Alterna-Flames
Candelabras top the list of fireplace toys. An ornate candelabra filled with lit candles is an eye-catching alternative to a roaring fire. With a wood-burning fireplace, the candelabrum is set where the logs would be placed. With a gas fireplace, the candelabra are set in front of the logs as space allows.
Fireback Throwback
Another old-fashioned fireplace accessory making a comeback is the fireback. The metal sheet set in the back of the fireplace to protect the walls from the fire and to radiate heat back into the room is back.
It’s a functional piece that’s also artistic, judging from the interesting patterns. For example, you can purchase a fireback etched with the image of a bass jumping for a dragonfly.
Screen Time
Screens to protect a room from flying ashes may be less important with gas fireplaces, but it’s not stopping anyone from acquiring the accessory. In Los Angeles, Esformes is ordering custom-designed, acid-washed screens for her clients with scrollwork, birds and leaves.
“These can really make a fireplace sing,” says Esformes.
Log Jam
For a lovely bit of log support, you of course need andirons – the ornate metal pieces used to keep logs in place. You can choose sleek brass or wrought iron shapes, or opt for whimsical cactus, cats or owls. You simply can’t have too many toys when you’re playing with fire.
