Taking Care of Carpet

The second time is a charm for recycled carpet: a durable, enviro-friendly floor covering.

Environmentally comfortable: Carpet underlay pad made from 100-percent post-consumer carpet, by Reliance.

Believe it or not, carpet can be recycled.

What’s not hard to believe, though, is that it’s a lot more difficult than setting a blue bin on the curb each week.

Currently, there are only 15 carpet reclamation facilities in the United States, according to the Carpet America Recovery Effort, Atlanta, Ga. But the small number of plants have put up some big numbers.

In 2005, 225 million pounds of carpet was kept out of landfills, according to CARE. While that’s only 5 percent of the total amount of carpet that goes into landfills each year, it’s a 100-percent increase over the amount saved in 2004 and another 100-percent increase is expected in 2006, says Bob Peoples, director of sustainability for the Carpet and Rug Institute.

“If we can get more people demanding these [products], you’ll see more investing in the infrastructure,” he says.

Consumers interested in purchasing carpet made from recycled materials or recycling their old carpet should check with their local retailers about what products are available and if the retailer belongs to a reclamation project. Major manufacturers such as Invista, Mohawk and Shaw all offer products made from recycled material.

Currently, carpeting backing is being made from recycled ground carpet and coal fly ash. Reusing these materials replaces the need for calcium carbonate, which must be mined. For face fibers, carpets made from Nylon 6 material can be broken down and rewoven into carpet yarns. Shaw Industries, Dalton, Ga., will be reopening the Evergreen Nylon Recycling plant in Augusta, Ga., for this purpose. Carpet underlay cushion also can be produced from recycled carpets.

While recycled-material products or reclamation projects might not be available in all areas, Peoples advises consumers to be patient, as they don’t pop up overnight. The more interest there is in post-consumer products, he says, the more manufacturers and retailers will buy into them.
