5 Questions with David Tutera

The ‘My Fair Wedding’ host gives his tips for staying cool, looking chic and simply having a great party

David Tutera is all about weddings. Last year the New York-based party planner released his sixth book, “The Big White Book of Weddings” (St. Martin’s Press, 2009), and teamed up with Faviana to produce a line of bridal gowns that bear his name. And his popular wedding planning show, “My Fair Wedding,” is currently in its third season on WE tv. Here, the wedding extraordinaire naturally talks planning, dresses and even grooms!

Q: On your show you sweep in three weeks before the big day and overhaul everything the bride has planned for her wedding. Obviously, they trust you, but do you have to help them keep their sanity?

A: While I do step in and literally “revise” their entire weddings, my brides truly do know and trust that I will do what is best for them and for their special day. Every bride gets nervous as her big day approaches, but I think that it’s actually easier for the brides on my show because they are totally removed from the planning details and can just focus on themselves and their family and friends.

Q: You recently launched your own line of gowns with Faviana. Do you have a favorite gown or a favorite aspect about gowns you love?

A: Choosing a favorite would be unfair to my brides as they were designed to reflect a woman’s personal style, so each bride’s choice is the best one for her. However, I can tell you that the gowns with detachable bottoms offer the option of converting the bridal gown into a party dress for the reception, which is something I love to do to make my brides feel like stars, so I do tend to favor those designs ... the “wardrobe change” concept is a great way to make women stand out on their day!

Q: What tips do you have for the groom? On the premiere of your show’s new season you spent some time helping the groom with his wardrobe. What was that like?

A: Many grooms now are as involved as the bride is in creating a day that will capture both of their personalities, but my advice to any groom who isn’t as enthusiastic about the wedding plans is to find a few elements that they can get into, and to support the brides decision and excitement on the rest! The men’s fashion segment you saw this season was a first for us, and we did this because we wanted to remind brides and couples that the men’s fashion is also a big part of the wedding.

Q: Is there an element of the wedding that people – to your horror! – tend to overlook? What’s your favorite thing to embellish that couples might tend to glance over?

A: I think that many people – most, actually – overlook lighting, and this is absolutely crucial to a successful ambiance. Lighting can enhance a room, highlight the décor, flatter the guests, draw focus to or away from certain room elements, and create a mood or several moods throughout the night with changing cues. While not everyone has the budget for a full-scale lighting design, renting a few canister lights to add a wash of color to the room’s perimeter, utilizing any pin spots a venue might have built in to accent the centerpieces, or even dimming the lights are easier and more cost-efficient ways of adding some ambiance with lighting.

Q: The big thing in weddings recently has been smaller budgets, scaling back and DIY. For brides trying to do more with less, what are some easy ways for them to take things from fair to fabulous?

A: My biggest tip on this is to steer clear of the “knickknack trap.” I find that many brides on a budget end up purchasing an abundance of small, inexpensive and often tacky items that relate to their theme. The misconception here is that all of those small costs add up to what could have been spent on a simple centerpiece, and [they] actually make less of an impact on the room.
