The Must-Haves

For every room, there that one thing you just have to get

The Bathroom: A Must-Have Mirror

For Allison Hall, a former editor at Domino Magazine, the No. 1 bathroom piece doesn’t create suds or hold soap. “A fabulous, stunning mirror is a must,” says Hall. “It makes the bathroom feel special by adding to the character of the room and allows couples to show their personal style.”

The Bedroom: Sheets, Sheets, Sheets

Really great, comfortable sheets should be the centerpiece of your bedroom registry. Crisp, silky hotel sheeting or personalized linen that bears your new monogram both are popular, says Pottery Barn’s Oshirak, who’s also seen the “green” trend spill over into registries with organic-cotton linens.

The Dining Room: Formal China, White Linens

In step with the current “less is more” trend, many modern couples are opting to forgo the formal china in favor of classy casual tableware like Sophie Conran for Portmeirion or the Great White line from Pottery Barn. These chic, more-affordable collections are dishwasher-safe but also easy to dress up with bold table linen or eye-catching mismatched vintage goblets. “It’s much more stylish to go restaurant-style these days, with elegant but plain everydayware for all occasions,” says Apartment Therapy’s Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan.

You might also choose to change things up by forgoing white linen in favor of something more sophisticated. “I love black tablecloths, says Gillingham-Ryan. “They are elegant, surprising and set the food, glasses and dishes off really beautifully.” They are also rather difficult to find so a registry is a great time to stock up.

The Living Room: Open-Ended

For the “living” room, there are plenty of must-haves:

• Kelly Ellis, designer: Vases for fresh flowers

• Donna Ferrari, Brides: Sleeper chair

• Vicki Lang, Crate & Barrel: Trunk

• Summer Krecke, WeddingChannel.com: Picture frames
