Creating a Great Guest Experience

Wedding maestro Colin Cowie shares his secrets for crafting a welcoming wedding

Slashed wedding budgets might put the fear of a "cheap" wedding into many brides' minds, but that reaction may just be an overreaction.

"The recession might be putting a dampener on many [things]," says celebrity party planner Colin Cowie, "but people will continue to fall in love and want to get married."

To make the most of a tight budget, Cowie suggests editing the number of elements you try to perfect.

"Instead of trying to do 10 things on the skinny, pick five things and do them well," says Cowie. Upgrading from chicken to lamb, doing cupcakes versus cake and creating interesting centerpieces and tablescapes as a way to up style and increase the guest experience.

"I do not believe that anybody expects anything today other than to be entertained," says Cowie.

"My best words of advice: It's not about impressing your guest, but they'll feel naturally impressed if you make them feel welcome and comfortable."

If you're having a more intimate gathering - never do 350 guests, says Cowie - embrace color to give the space a more dramatic feel. For the summer, Cowie suggest bold colors, like a bright limey green and various shades of purple.

As for thanks, Cowie says to think function-first.

"I always like to give them something they can use," he says, be it a regional favorite like Vermont toffee or a fragrant candle for a beach wedding that also serves as a mosquito repellent. "It's good to theme [gifts] because otherwise where is the there, and why does it fit in?

"It's the sum of all the parts that makes the wedding successful," Cowie says.
