The host of the Travel Channel’s “Passport to Great Weekends” spends more than 200 days a year on the road. But while vacations are second (if not first) nature to her, a couple planning their honeymoon might not know all the ins and outs of exploring an exotic locale. We caught up with Brown via e-mail to get her tips for first-time travelers. What’s the first thing a couple needs to think about when deciding to travel out of country? Do you have all the necessary documents to leave and, most importantly, to get back in? A passport is essential – and a visa if the country requires it. How far in advance should someone obtain a passport? Always check the U.S. passport services Web site (http://travel.state.gov/passport) for the most up-to-date information, but I would feel the most comfortable allowing no less than a month. A good tip to remember is that there is a rush to get passports for summer trips abroad so the springtime is when passport services are the busiest. What are some locales that are both good first-time-abroad locations and great honeymoon spots? I always say England, Scotland and Ireland are “Europe Lite.” Because of the common language, it’s very easy, and the incredible hospitality of the locals (especially Ireland) makes it a complete joy to be there. On the day of travel, how early should you arrive at the airport? Two-and-a-half to three hours. With that much time you will not be stressed, no matter how long the lines for check-in and security are. What’s the best way to go about obtaining/exchanging currency? Wait until you get to the country and go to an ATM just like you would at home. Don’t use the exchange services you see at an airport because they tack on a higher percentage than banks. Also, alert your credit card companies you’ll be traveling abroad so they don’t stop payment if they feel something is suspicious. And if using a credit card, make sure the store charges you the amount in THEIR currency. Do not take their offer of converting it to U.S. dollars. Your credit card will give you the most favorable exchange rate, and that store will not. What are the best resources for travel tips/learn about a locale, both prior to traveling and while you’re there? A travel guide like Time Out, Frommer's, Rick Steves, etc., is always an essential tool to have with you at all times. Along with suggestions, they also fill you in on customs, so you know how to be polite and gracious in someone else’s country. Remember you are relying on the kindness of strangers. Knowledge about their culture and everyday customs goes a very long way. Also, get a language translation book that gives you the pronunciations of the words phonetically. If a book doesn’t have this it will be useless to you since you will have no idea how to say a word or phrase. Coach, Business, First Class – Should you go for the best possible when traveling internationally? Who doesn’t want to begin an 8-hour flight with a glass of champagne? If you can financially swing it, yes, by all means, go for first or business class, which will allow you to celebrate your marriage the moment you get on the flight. These days, couples are forgoing the traditional registry and setting up their honeymoon as a fund to contribute to. Suggest people gift you their miles and go for first class! Any packing do’s and don’ts? Don’t over pack. Go for one basic color: black or brown, make sure all pieces of clothing can be paired with one another, then use shoes and accessories to dress up or down the look. Do pack an extra empty duffle bag to use for all your amazing purchases for the trip home. What’s a good length of time for an international trip? Nothing less than two full weeks. The time change and travel time alone make anything less feel overwhelming and rushed. |
