Allergy-Free Arrangements

Your best bets for bouquets that do chic without the sneeze

With spring right around the corner, allergy season isn't too far off. And when it comes to a bride's big day, there's nothing like a blooming bouquet to set off the sneezing. To avoid watery eyes on your wedding day, follow these expert tips on how to choose the perfect arrangement for you, allergies and all.

"Allergies are always an issue. And, it seems to be getting worse with flowers just as it is with foods," says Leanne Kesler, president of the Floral Design Institute in Portland, Ore. "The more scented a flower, the more of a problem it is. Also, high pollen flowers are an issue."

Kesler recommends brides take the few months prior to a wedding to test a few varieties. Local, straight-from-the farm flowers can be one of the worst options for brides. The shipped-in, highly manipulated hybrids often have scent and pollen factors reduced to increase longevity, Kesler says.

Here's a list of some of the Do's and Don'ts for allergy-sensitive brides:

Do's

Orchid - avoid scented varieties

Hydrangea

Rose - unscented, not garden varieties

Hypericum

Larkspur

Anthurium

Bird of Paradise

Tulip

Iris

Asiatic lily - not oriental

Zinnia

Don'ts

The Mini Aster family - including: solidaster, montecasino and golden rod

Sunflower

Chrysanthemum

Daisy

Oriental lily

Stephanotis

Gardenia

Misty (Latifolium)
