A Man, A Scan, A Plan

Couples are tossing out the monogrammed towel in favor of manlier registry items. Here’s how to get the groom geared up about gifts

Jersey knit or satin sheets? Diamond-shaped towel monogram or script? Silicon or metal spatula? Soup bowls and mixing bowls might not be anywhere near as thrilling to dudes as Super Bowl. But when it comes to the registry, the bride doesn’t need to go it alone.

“In the research we’ve done, guys have told us that for a lot of the wedding planning they felt like a tagalong, there to nod and say yes,” says Chris Easter, the 25-year-old co-founder of TheManRegistry.com. “Marriage is an equal partnership, fifty-fifty, and so it’s important to get the guy involved. It’s a good start to the wedding because ideally that is how it’s going to be once you’re married.”

Easter and his brothers Jimmy Horner and Bobby Horner launched TheManRegistry.com in March 2008 after they noticed their friends’ and family members’ wedding registries primarily had gifts geared toward the bride. TheManRegistry.com offers a registry with hundreds of guy gifts (right now the most popular product is a 64-ounce stainless steel flask) and wedding tips for grooms.

Barbecue grills, outdoor gear and electronics might make a man excited about his registry, and they could be the most useful items for newlyweds. Debbie Tannacore, a wedding planner and coordinator in Nashville, says couples often live together before marriage and so they already have typical registry items like sheets, towels and dishes.

“A video camera would be a great gift for a new couple instead of a plate,” Tannacore says.

If home décor is the priority, Tannacore suggests giving the groom a room to decorate by himself or using Lowe’s or Home Depot registries for paint, tools and renovation needs.

“The great thing about the registry is you get to choose exactly what you want and a lot of guys really like that … So just sit down with you fiancé and ask him what he wants,” Tannacore says.

According to Easter, TheManRegistry.com gets many brides as primary registrants, since women are recognizing the utility of the items and enjoying the simplicity of the creating and updating registries online.

“We see a lot of people coming onto the Web site who aren’t even getting married but just want to pass it out for their birthdays or Christmas,” Easter says.

People are using the Internet to pool money and ship a large item like a TV directly to the newlyweds’ home, according to Tannacore. So the registry could get the groom the big game on an HDTV.
