Keeping Your Sanity in Check

Reconnecting pre-wedding can help keep your head afloat amidst all the planning

When it comes to the big day, the pressures of planning can be all too overwhelming for the bride and groom. It’s easy to forget love amid all the décor and dresses, but it’s essential to remember that love is the source of all the hoopla.

“The stresses of planning, working out the details and making decisions can put love on the back-burner,” says couples therapist Dr. Madeleine Y. Gomez, president of PsycHealth, Ltd. in Evanston, Ill. “It is important to remember that love and commitment to one another is the reason for all the energy that is being directed to the wedding planning.”

According to Gomez, communication is the key to avoiding any unnecessary stressors. Taking the time to address and resolve challenges that arise can minimize the impact of any roadblocks. “Sometimes the communication even has to be scheduled to make sure it occurs because it is so easy to put it off,” Gomez says. She recommends taking walks together, which have the dual benefit of physical exercise and an opportunity to chat.

Here are a few more tips to tackle the turbulence and let a little love back into your lives.

Rediscover an Old Hobby Together

Your passions are a part of you; reviving them together is a great way to get to know each other all over again. Whether it’s playing a sport or reading some of your old favorites, do it together.

Get Back in Rhythm

Dance classes can relieve the stress of planning in a fun fashion. “Many couples treat the lessons as date-nights,” says Peter Jones, director of the Ballroom Wedding Dance Studio in New York. “Couples learn how to communicate by moving seamlessly as one unit.” From the foxtrot, to salsa or tango, dancing can be a new form of therapy for you and your beau.

Take a Mini-Vacation

Getting away from it all is the best way to forget about your worries. So pack your bags and head off for the weekend. Staying at a small B&B or even a boutique hotel can give you an opportunity to recharge and gear up for planning with a new enthusiasm.

Work Out Together

Exercise can be great for letting go of that excess tension, and doing it together can have the added benefits of looking great on your day and finding a common goal to work toward.

Take a Staycation

With this economy and all the green that goes into planning, it might be more beneficial to stay home. So why not do a staycation? Cut off the outside world and turn your home into your own personal haven. You can even do themes like a Luau, Vegas or even a day at the spa in your own tub.

Revisit the Beginning

Remembering those first few months can be refreshing for any couple. Visit the place where you first met or go the restaurant where you had your first date. All those butterflies may just come flying back.
