The Lowdown on Weight Loss

What brides are doing to slim down for the big day

An upcoming wedding is the ultimate weight-loss motivator. Brides may want a big wedding, a big engagement ring, a big honeymoon, but the last thing they want is to look big on their special day in front of their friends and family.

Statistics show that more than 70 percent of brides-to-be want to lose weight before their wedding day. Many employ diverse dieting tactics, from diet pills to fasting. Fitness experts caution against such extremism and promote a more holistic approach with reduced caloric intake and extra exercise.

There is no shortage of diet options to guide brides through their weight-loss goals. Books and Web sites are devoted to the cause. Brides.com offers the Vow to Wow Body Makeover, allowing brides to select a program timeline, eating plan, weekly workout guides and e-mailed progress reports to see if brides have met their “daily food goals.” Others seeking to lose weight can visit celebrity trainer Cynthia Conde’s Web site, bridalbootcamponline.com, and follow her 12-week nutrition and fitness program. There’s also handy information found in “The Wedding Dress Diet” by registered dietitian Robyn Flipse, who advocates signing a weight-loss contract, enlisting supporters and then counting and charting every consumed calorie.

If the element of fun seems to be missing from these body-shaping strategies, brides can opt for the newest form of dieting through a “shapecation.” Health-conscious brides are now planning spa getaways with their bridesmaids where they can lose weight by eating calorie-conscious organic meals, tone up by working out and achieving a healthy glow with facials and massages. Brides should plan to up their budget for this indulgence. Packages can average $2,400, such as those at the Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif.

Keeping it simple is the mantra, however, for Janice Iturrizaga, a paralegal in West Los Angeles. She’s getting married in February 2009 and wants to tone up by losing five pounds. She’s giving herself an ample six to seven months to achieve her weight-loss goal by using the South Beach Diet, known for its minimal-carb intake.

But, she may not need so much time. While the stress of planning a wedding may actually exacerbate the challenge of dieting for some brides, who may turn to food for comfort, Iturrizaga isn’t affected.

“I tend to eat less when I’m stressed,” she says.
