Bridal Body Shapers

Problem areas are no problem with garments designed to help slim silhouettes

Brides may have the outside covered when they buy their fantasy gown, but what they wear underneath is almost more important than the dress itself.

Whether to smooth the abs, lift those derrieres or push up breasts, the right underwear is what can make or break the silhouette of a bride. These days, brides will pile on the garments to tackle different problem areas.

“Brides are putting on as much control garments as possible, even layering them,” says Christina Navarra, president of Boston-based lingerie boutique Unveil, and unveiledbride.com. “It’s about function versus fashion. Very few women will sacrifice function because they want to look spectacular.”

Brides are looking for seamless control, so creases don’t peak through the gown. Long-line bustiers extending down the torso with flexible boning for cleavage enhancement are popular, says Navarra. Look for ones with stretch microfiber that provide light control and hidden flexible stays and underwired cups for boosting those bosoms.

Navarra says don’t forsake the bustier for a traditional strapless bra.

“These are better than strapless bras, which simply hold you together, but don’t provide that extra lift,” she says.

Strapless bodysuits can smooth out unwanted bumps along the body, and those with low backs are ideal for most strapless dresses. Full-slip body shapers made of slick fabrics won’t cling to clothes and are a good match for fitted gowns and sheaths.

High-waisted, long-leg panties are another way to firm the sides and tummy while shaping the hips, thighs and rear end. By starting under the bustline and stretching to the mid-thigh, this foundation provides firm control without any lines and lumps along the way.

Controlwear has gotten more important as brides forgo hosiery on their big day, opting for the ease of strappy sandals. Navarra cautions though that such underpinnings can only go so far in making brides look slim and trim for those wedding photos. Taking care in selecting the right gown for your shape is a must. For instance, backless gowns aren’t for the bustier bride.

“If you have a DD cup, there’s no product in the market that will support you if your back is exposed,” she says.

Some brides may balk at the price tag of such garments, which can run $100 to $250. But, remember those photos last a lifetime. If anything, Navarra says, ditch the honeymoon lingerie, which usually doesn’t get a lot of use.
