Jewelry Without the Fuss

If you opt for the understated look, selecting rings to match your simple needs feels like mission impossible. Here’s how the minimalist at heart can maximize the experience

Jewelry, traditionally, is all about glitz and glam. But in today’s culture, and certainly in the current economic times, consumers increasingly are going for what pleases the mind, not the eye.

For couples planning their perfect wedding, that certainly may include opting for rings that reflect their personal style and tone down the bling.

“We’ve seen a drastic change in the market,” says Dan Scott, chief marketing officer for jeweler Scott Kay. “Couples now see shopping as an individualistic experience, recognizing their wedding rings as an extension of their personalities.”

Gone are the days of cookie-cutter rings. Today’s couples make this universal symbol unique.

Simple Pleasures

Choosing a blingless ring doesn’t mean sacrificing a stone entirely. For Kate Breski, vice president of Trabert & Hoeffer Jewels, Chicago, it’s still all about the rock. “We’re not selling the stylized, detailed ring,” she says. “It’s the solitaire engagement ring and wedding bands with clean lines.” Designs move away from the micro pave stones and welcome a classic, less-is-more look.

Metal Matters

The real buzz in the wedding world is in the band. Move over platinum, get out of the way gold, it’s time for palladium to shine. This sister metal of platinum sees the most popularity in the men’s wedding bands, says Debra Scarpa, president of DJS Marketing Group. This precious metal has all the star qualities with significant price advantages compared to its more-expensive relative. And keeping with the minimalist mentality, Scarpa observes, “All the designs with palladium are modern and fresh.”

Today’s grooms might have minimal needs, but they definitely speak up when it comes to their wedding bands. Just as men are becoming more active in the planning process, the men’s market is becoming the fastest-growing for many jewelers, which Scott says is the climate at his company. Men flock to classic designs that that tend to avoid stones but maintain a solid, wide band.

To Match or Not to Match

Despite your desire to keep it simple, fear not if you partner is over-the-top. Find freedom knowing that couples do not have to match their wedding bands. A woman’s band should properly compliment her engagement with a flush fit, but it doesn’t have to match her man’s. You’ll have the rest of your lives to compromise, so let your style shine when when it comes to selecting your wedding rings.
