Time for a ‘Manover’

How to get your groom-to-be to take better care of himself

Man getting facial

For ladies, wedding prep begins minutes after the proposal. From bridal boot camp to bikini waxes, brides-to-be primp and pamper for their day of glow.

But how does a bride not outshine her groom? Move over makeover: here’s how to give your guy a “manover.” Today’s grooms say ‘I do’ to pre-nuptial skincare.

Universal skincare

Metrosexuals made waves in the grooming industry, but product lines like Nivea for Men brought skin care maintenance to the masses. Still, for many the notion of lotion doesn’t sink in. Guys like Tim Shanahan, Chicago, pre-event prep with a hot shower and quick shave. Admitting to once buying pore-cleansing pads, this low maintenance man “tried a strip out one night but then tossed the rest.”

Bridge the grooming gap

For product developers like Josh LeVine, executive vice present and creative director of Davi Luxury Brand Group (daviskin.com), putting your best face forward falls under routine – like brushing your teeth – and should not be considered an extra commitment. “Men’s skin is 30 percent thicker than women’s and is exposed to more irritation from shaving,” LeVine says. “So essentially men need more restorative products to replenish the moisture.” And since the sun doesn’t discriminate, see that your groom uses a moisturizer with SPF: Red faces and wedding photos don’t mix.

Manover momentum

People today are more aware of life wellness, so getting your man on board shouldn’t be too difficult. “From organic eating, to diet and exercise, taking care of skin ranks right up with healthy living,” LeVine says. An immediate to-do list? Add drinking lots of water to your daily intake.

So when it comes to gearing up for the big day, LeVine shares some easy everyday tips that won’t make guys like Tim Shanahan sacrifice their low-maintenance mojo:

• A pre-shave exfoliating session to slough away dead skin leaves more opportunity for a close shave and less opportunity for skin irritation.

• A good shave cream makes for a worthy investment rather than a generic gel. Consider that most men shave daily, so encourage your man to protect his mug with a shave cream upgrade.

• Always follow a good shave with a moisturizer or restorative serum. Remember to look for products with SPF.

• Beware of products that use alcohol, and seek out ones with witch hazel. While also a drying agent, this natural product doesn’t do as much damage as those that contain typical alcohol ingredients.

While no groom can compete with a bride’s glow, arm him with the tools for a fighting chance. And despite being on the cutting edge of the metro movement when it comes to the big day, LeVine stands by tradition. “Nothing beats and old fashion shave barber shop style shave.” Whether your groom’s a retrosexual or metrosexual, this timeless treatment speaks to all skin types.
